Hanging
out at Cape Palliser is not something you want to do – at least
not in the cliff-clinging houses to be seen on the spectacular drive
to a lighthouse
and seal colony
at the southern-most tip of the North Island.
In
choice weather, take the 40-minute journey south from Martinborough
– that’s if you can tear yourself away from the world famous vineyards
– and bask in what seems like pre-historic reality as countless
numbers of seals live and let live.
Then
you’ll want to drive west a little to Lake Ferry, where there’s
a hotel that serves scrumptious whitebait fritters and decorates
its walls with pioneering stories and photos.
This
charming lake district remains pretty much as it was when pioneers
walked around the coast from Wellington
to develop the furtile plains of the Wairarapa into wealthy farmland.
