of Franklin Zoo animals
When
touring to places new one of the best things to do upon arrival
is to talk with local folk about the best things to do and
see in the area they know.
The
other week we were told of a small zoo in the Bombay Hills
south of Auckland and so popped into the Franklin Zoo to see
what was on offer.
Plenty
as it turned out.
Franklin
Zoo has new owners and you can see they will have their work
cut out for them doing up some of the older enclosures but
their animals look great.
There
are lions, hawks, parrots, monkeys by the barrel - inlcuding
tamarins and spider monkeys - turtles, wallabies, a one-eyed
otter, emus, spider monkeys and plenty more.
Franklin
Zoo has an excellent map to follow as you make your way around
the zoo with details on which animals you can feed and which
you should not. The zebra and goat are cool - and cute - but
I was not prepared to hold out a feed bag, available at the
zoo's shop, to the lions.
They
have now also got an African elephant Jumbo.
Franklin
Zoo is well tucked away off main roads but if the kids are
getting grotty in the back of the car and you feel like something
relaxing and different, then give the place a visit.
Franklin
Zoo is open daily between 9am and 5pm and will cost adults
$14, Children from 3-17 years $7, Pensioners and students
$12.
It
is at 83 Ridge Rd, Tuakau RD 4 – exit 474 off SHWY1.
